Description:
1940's Large Rattan Factory Trolley - Basket. Stunning and very original survivor from the 1960's. The basket is branded underneath 'Workshops for the blind 1966 - Bristol'. The Bristol Asylum for the Blind', also known as 'Bristol Royal School and Workshops for the Blind', was established in 1793 to train visually impaired people for future employment. The workshop specialised in crafts such as basket and mat making, the best of which were sold to the public. From 1838-1900, the asylum was based at the top of Park Street, Bristol. After World War II there was a huge rise in the number of students attending the school, peaking at 126 and then declining throughout the 1950s. The school closed in 1968. The basket features the most exceptional hide reinforcements hand stitched onto the basket. Ordinarily we would have dated this from the 1940's but we suspect the design was from the 1940's but production continued through to the last years of the workshop. Internal dimensions: 135L x 68W x 61H all cm.
