Helen Chadwick Train Of Thought – Hixter Bankside

Helen Chadwick – Train Of Thought – Hixter Bankside. This artwork was installed by Mark Hix at his eponymous London restaurant Hixter Bankside. Mark Hix (MBE) is an English restaurateur and entrepreneur who rose to fame with the opening of Hix Oyster and Fish House, Tramshed, Rivington Bar and Grill and Hixter Bankside amongst others. Hix brought a fresh focus to the London restaurant scene with innovative British cooking and a passion for foraged ingredients and of course art. Hix was a huge believer in creating an innovate restaurant interior and used art throughout his restaurants most famously using a Damien Hirst Shark suspended in a huge glass tank in his Tramshed venue, he is reputed to have taught Tracey Emin how to cook! This artwork is by British Artist Helen Chadwick, (1953 ? 1996). Chadwick was a British sculptor, photographer and installation artist. In 1987, she became one of the first women artists to be nominated for the Turner Prize. Chadwick was known for “challenging stereotypical perceptions of the body in elegant yet unconventional forms. Her work draws from a range of sources, from myths to science, grappling with a plethora of unconventional, visceral materials that included chocolate, lambs tongues and rotting vegetable matter “. This work was completed in the nineties and was sourced by Hix for Bankside. The piece uses a pair of original London Underground bench seats which were adapted in her sculpture ‘A train of thought’, a witty take on the London Underground. The sculpture was modified by Hix with a ‘Hix’ tube line map referring to his various London outposts. As a collectors piece this is a three way piece of history, Helen Chadwick, Mark Hix and London Underground. Main train section is: 82L x 200H x 111W, the single bench 69L x 85H x 111W.
